“Complexity of Diversity: Challenges in Student Retention”

Mark C. Montgomery, PhD
Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Public Services
Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC)

4:00 - 5:30pm
Barataria Room
University Center
UNO Lakefront Campus

How students engage their academic path varies widely. To predict “success,” education researchers and stakeholders try to model, predict and assess the impact of internal and external forces on student performance & retention. Through an evidenced-based dissertation and subsequent book, Dr. Montgomery will explore how to make positive & influential changes by facilitators of learning who directly and indirectly impact student performance. The presentation will challenge the changes needed by secondary and post-secondary environments if retention of students, especially those at risk of academic failure, is to be improved. Dr. Montgomery will discuss how, “...educational institutions need to grasp the cultural, physical, mental, environmental, and economical needs of those we aim to inspire” (Painting the Academic Canvas).

Dr. Montgomery is the author of Painting the Academic Canvas with Students of Color: Assuming you can retain them.

Kim Long, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Education and Human Development will provide introductory remarks. A light reception and book signing will follow the presentation.

This event is sponsored by the Alexis de Tocqueville Project; the UNO Student Government Association; the Department of Planning and Urban Studies; and the College of Liberal Arts, Educations and Human Development.
